Özet

It's widely known that in patients with tuberculous effusion, the ratio of pleural fluid mesothelial cells is very low. However, the results in the literature are controversial. In this study we have determined the ratio of mesothelial cells in the pleural fluid of 30 patients with pleural tuberculosis. In the 26 patients (86.7 %) the ratio of pleural fluid mesothelial cells was lower than 5 %; in 4 patients (13.3 %) this was higher than 5 %. There was not statistically significant correlation between the number of repeated thoracentesis and the percent of pleural mesothelial cells. We have also determined a positive correlation between the number of polymorphonuclear leucocytes and the number of mesothelial cells. This supports the findings that the mesothelial cells are predominantly seen in the early phase of inflammatory reaction. We concluded that fluid mesothelial ratio lower than 5 % is a contributing finding for the diagnosis of tuberculosis, however a ratio higher than 5 % can not exclude the diagnosis of tuberculous pleurisy.
