Özet
Rectal cancer is a disease managed by a multidisciplinary treatment approach. Pre-or post-surgical therapies increase both the local disease control and survival rates. The role of radiotherapy in early-stage rectal cancer has not standardized yet. It can be used in selected cases. However, surgery after neoadjuvant radiotherapy is the standard treatment approach for locally advanced disease. Neoadjuvant radiotherapy can be given as long-course or short-course. Follow-up without surgical operation in patients with complete response after radiotherapy is a controversial issue and is not recommended for all patients as standard management. Patients who have not received neoadjuvant radiotherapy should be offered adjuvant treatment options following surgery after a thorough evaluation of the stage of the disease and the patient's risk factors. Over the years, radiotherapy planning has evolved from 2D systems to 3D systems. More conformal therapies can be planned with intensity-modulated radiotherapy applications. Recently, newly developed radiotherapy techniques allow delivering the required radiotherapy doses with better protection of the quality of life and organ functions.
