Özet
Hemodialysis patients often suffer from various gastrointestinal problems that arise from the systemic effects of renal function loss. This chapter will discuss gastrointestinal problems, their etiology, and the management strategies commonly observed in this population. Gastrointestinal problems in hemodialysis patients manifest themselves as issues such as increased gastric acid, gastroparesis, peptic ulcer disease, and gastrointestinal bleeding. With renal failure, uremia and toxin accumulation can disrupt the integrity of the gastrointestinal mucosa and lead to an inflammatory response. The hemodialysis procedure can also stress the gastrointestinal tract, triggering specific problems. Increased sensitivity of the gastric and duodenal mucosa, high fasting serum gastrin levels, high ammonia levels, and increased serum levels of hormones such as cholecystokinin, neurotensin, and glucagon, which play a role in regulating gastrointestinal motility, and the frequent occurrence of hypercalcemia, hyperkalemia, and multiple drug use are the main predispositions of the development of gastrointestinal symptoms and lesions in these patients.
