Mercury intoxication in a family living in a rural area

Özet
Two siblings coming from rural East Anatolia developed skin rash, loose teeth, arthralgia and, one of them, anemia and leukopenia. Mercury intoxication was proved by determing blood mercury levels of both patients and their father. The probable cause was ingestion of meat from a lamb which had died of an unknown disease. The different clinical pictures of the family members could be due to either differing amounts of mercury ingestion or different hypersensitive reactions to mercury. The clinical status of both siblings was improved with penicillamine therapy.
