Can sumatriptan cause false positive results in exercise electrocardiography? Sumatriptan eforlu elektrokardiyografide yalanci pozitif sonuçlara neden olabilir mi?

Objective: In this clinical study, we investigated whether or not sumatriptan administration resulted in false positive results in exercise ECG. Material and Methods: Forty consecutive patients were included. Sumatriptan and control groups consisted of 22 and 18 patients with migraine, respectively. All the patients underwent exercise ECG testing performed according to the Bruce protocol. The patients whose exercise ECG was positive were additionally subjected to coronary angiography. Results: When exercise ECG data of patients taking sumatriptan (mean age 51.77 ± 5.91 yrs, 13 female) were compared with that of the control group (mean age 53.83 ± 6.59 yrs, 6 female), it was found that the number of false positive results in the sumatriptan group was higher (p= 0.02). False positive results were observed in 8 patients in the sumatriptan group and in two patients of the control. Coronary angiographies of patients with positive exercise ECGs were normal in both groups. Conclusion: Patients taking sumatriptan often evince false positive results in exercise ECG. Therefore, we suggest that sumatriptan administration should cease at least two days before exercise ECG in order to avoid misleading results. Copyright © 2005 by Türkiye Klinikleri.
