Özet

The aim of this study was to investigate a possible relation between Helicobacter pylori (H.pylori) infection and low serum cobalamin levels. Seventy-seven patients who had no definable etiologic factor for low serum cobalamin levels were included in study. The mean age was 34.52±1.86 (61 female, 16 male). The patients underwent upper gastrointestinal endoscopy, and multiple biopsies were taken for histopathologic examination and CLO- test. Seventy three of 77 patients (94.8%) had H.pylori infection. H.pylori- pozitif patients received therapy with omeprazole (40 mg/d), clarithromycin (1 g/d) and amoxicillin (2g/d) for one week. All laboratory test were repeated one month after the cessation of therapy. After therapy, H.pylori eradication rate was 70.1% (52/73). While mean vitamin B12 levels increased from 104.61±30.17 pg/mL to 219.39±67.58 pg/mL in the H.pylori eradicated group (p=0.0005), in the other group, it increased from 90.85±28.36 pg/mL to 106.33±35.29 pg/mL (p=0.01) (normal value 150-170 pg/mL). Serum cobalamin levels increased to normal values in 42 of 73 patients (58%) after therapy. In conclusion, H.pylori infection may be an ethiologic factor for cobalamin deficiency.
