Özet
Viral infections are the most serious health problem globally, causing unexpectedly higher mortality rates. The 2019 Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) is a dangerous disease caused by a new coronavirus known as severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). There are unreliable drugs and vaccines available to fight SARS-CoV-2 and there is still no effective and reliable treatment. Effective and rapid treatment of SARS-CoV-2 requires the development of antiviral therapeutic agents and herbal products are an excellent source for such discoveries. For thousands of years throughout history, humans have used herbal products to combat diseases. The metabolites, active components and phytochemicals of plants still support the great potential of plants for the prevention and treatment of coronavirus infection. The anti-SARS-Cov-2 activity of plant components in in silico, in vitro and in vivo experiments is supported by different studies. This chapter aims to present the main herbal products, their properties and potential antiviral effects against various viruses, mainly COVID-19. According to the studies, many important medicinal plant components with antiviral activity can be used for viral infections or prescribed as supportive therapy. The use of herbal compounds for different diseases is limited by the lack of information on safety profiles, dosage, etc. It is hoped that this chapter will help in areas such as the availability of rapid methods to screen herbal compounds for antiviral activity and the evaluation of the antiviral potential of various plant species for specific pathogens.
