Özet

Congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection is one of the most common congenital infection and a worldwide health issue, which causes congenital or delayed onset hearing loss. In many of developed countries, CMV is major cause of congenital hearing loss after genetic ones. Screening of congenital CMV has been recently popular due to both development of convenient and rapid detection methods and its treatability by antiviral agents, which improves sensorineural hearing loss partly to significantly. It is surely beyond doubt that establishment of efficient newborn hearing screening programs in many countries is another factor which makes congenital CMV screening possible. In the countries, in which congenital CMV screening is available it is mostly run in cooperation with newborn hearing screening program. In Türkiye, newborn hearing screening program run for more than 15 years and rate of congenital hearing loss is at – around 0,2-0,3 %. Since recent studies reveal that secondary CMV infections during pregnancy in the countries, such as Türkiye, having high CMV seropositivity rate before pregnancy causes hearing loss makes screening of congenital CMV a current issue. Aim of this literature review is first to present current picture of congential CMV and associated hearing loss in Türkiye in the light of international literature. Then, necessity and feasibility of a national congenital CMV screening program, which is integrated to current national newborn hearing screening program, will be discussed.
