Özet
Palliative care is a multidisciplinary approach to improving the quality of life for patients living with any serious illness and their families. Cancer is one of the most important health challenges in the world that requires palliative care beginning from the time of diagnosis. Along with the promising advances in cancer detection and treatment techniques, the number of patients trying to cope with their symptom burden in the community also increases. A good palliative care program with a particular focus on primary health-care services and home-based care is associated with improvements in the quality of life of patients and families while decreasing the utilisation of health-care resources and costs. Although a community-based palliative care model was introduced in Turkey, there are many barriers in implementation, such as lack of education, personnel, funding, public awareness, coordination of care transitions or uniform quality measurements. Understanding the palliative care needs of advanced cancer patients in the community represents a first step toward the development of delivery models that integrate palliative care into comprehensive cancer care in various care settings. There is a need for studies regarding the outcomes of home-based palliative care and improving guidelines with best available evidence.
