Özet
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a gastrointestinal disorder marked by persistent abdominal pain and irregular bowel habits during defecation. It does not have an underlying organic cause, isn't life-threatening, but significantly impacts one's quality of life. The primary symptoms include recurrent abdominal pain and fluctuating bowel habits, which can involve diarrhea, constipation, or a combination of both. Diagnosis follows ROME IV criteria, and if fully met without alarming symptoms, IBS can be diagnosed without further testing. Approximately 70% of IBS cases are mild and do not require medical attention. In the remaining 30%, symptoms can be moderate to severe, and most seek primary care. IBS is costly due to unsatisfactory relief of symptoms, unnecessary tests, treatments, consultations, and surgeries, leading to increased healthcare expenses and loss of productivity.
