Allergic reactions caused by hymenoptera stings are a major medical problem. The clinical symptoms and treatment of hymenoptera sting anaphylaxis are typical of those occurring from other causes of anaphylaxis. Venom immunotherapy should be administered to all patients who have had a serious anaphylactic sting reaction and have positive venom skin tests. Recommended maintenance doses are 100 mcg of single venoms and 300 mcg of mixed vespid venoms. Venom immunotherapy can be stopped if skin test reactions become negative. For most patients, three years of immunotherapy appears adequate, despite persistence of positive venom skin tests.
