Reconstruction with circular external fixator in massive calcaneal destructions due to land mine injury

Özet
Osseous reconstruction was carried out with distraction osteogenesis by using circular external fixator in 14 cases with massive calcaneal destruction due to land mine injury. All cases were also treated with free flap for soft tissue reconstruction after an average of 8.6 months following the injury. The period between the application of circular external fixator and its removal was 106-183 days (average, 144 days). The mean follow-up was 33.6 months. Two excellent, nine good, two fair and one poor result have been observed. Our findings reveal that this procedure is an alternative treatment method for the osseous reconstruction in the absence of traumatic calcaneus which has occurred as a result of serious trauma with high energy, such as land mine injuries.
