Özet
Tuberculosis (TB) is a preventable and generally treatable disease. After coronavirus disease (COVID-19), TB has become the second leading cause of death worldwide due to a single infectious agent. It is estimated that approximately one-quarter of the world's population is infected with TB. The primary mode of transmission of the disease is through air, and factors such as the duration and type of ventilation in the environment, the amount of bacilli emitted by the source person, the virulence of the bacilli, and the underlying diseases and medications used by the host person affect the transmissibility. The clinical presentation of the disease varies depending on the organ in which the bacillus is located, most commonly affecting the lungs and bronchi. If not treated, the mortality rate can be as high as 50%. The World Health Organization (WHO) has published numerous guidelines on tuberculosis, and in its latest report published in 2023, it emphasized the urgent need for action to end the global tuberculosis epidemic by 2030.
