Özet

Introduction: Incidentally discovered asemptomatic small renal masses are being reported more frequently due to new and improved imaging modalities such as ultrasonography and computerized tomography. Fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) is still controversial to use for diagnosis of renal masses. We wanted to determine the value of FNAB and in which subgroups FNAB provide the most accurate information on the renal masses. Material and Method: We evaluated FNAB results in 40 patients with renal mass in our clinic between July 1998 and June 2001. Biopsies were performed with 20 gauge Wescott neddles and via USG. We used percentage and Chi-Square test for analysis of statistics. Results: FNAB made correct diagnosis in 36 of 41 cases (87.8%). Of the remaining 5 cases (12.2%), the diagnosis was insufficient and suspicious in spite of recurrent biopsies in 3 patients. Malignancy was found in 2 patients but histopathological subtype couldn't be made. FNAB was successful at a ratio of 92.7% in the diagnosis of malignancy. There were no false negative and false positive results by FNAB. FNAB was used to avoid surgery in 11 patients (26.8%). The treatment modalities have been changed in 8 patients (19.5%) according to biopsy results. The accuracy of biopsy for Fuhrman nuclear grade evaluation was 85.7%. There were 2 macroscopic hematuria and 3 subcapsular hematomas. Conclusions: FNAB is a safely diagnostic tool and, provides more accurate information at selected patients with renal mass.
