Özet
The causes and frequency of taking off masks during noninvasive ventilation (NIV) at first and last night of patient stay in the intensive care unit (ICU) were evaluated. The study was prospective, observational cohort study including 258 patients (176 males, 68.2 %) with NIV application at a training hospital within the year 2009. Causes of acute respiratory failure (ARF), ICU severity score (APACHEII), initial arterial blood gas measurements (ABGs), frequency and reasons of taking off mask during NIV at first and last night were recorded. Reasons of taking off mask were classified as: noncompliancy, for drinking water, rest and inadvertent sputum spill. Intubated patients were accepted as NIV failure. The median age was 65 (24-89) years, diagnosis of the cases: COPD 179 (69.4 %), mean initial ICU APACHE 11 score:16.8±5.3, for ABG mean pH:7.33±O.09. Majority of the patients interrupted NIV to drink water at night. Although statistically not significant, NIV sitccessfid patients had higher numbers of mask applications by nurses during night in ICU. It should be noted that with proper and effective follow-up, and intermittent taking-off the mask may be useful in NIV treatment..
