Özet
Objective: Electrocardiography (ECG) is an important diagnostic tool in evaluation of cardiovascular system. ECG standards in different age groups can differ with age, weight, height and body surface area. Although previous studies have tried to determine the normal standards for pediatric ECG's, some limitations are present in most of them. The effect of altitude on normal ECG limits has not been evaluated previously. In this study we aimed to determine the normal ECG standards in children living at moderate altitude (1850 m-Erzurum). Material and Methods: For this study 84.000 children attending to the primary schools in center of Erzurum were the target. A total of 3770 children were selected systematically. All children were examined and electrocardiography was recorded in all of them. Of 3770, 1822 children, that were concluded to be sufficient to represent the target population, were included into this study. A total of 292 ECG's were excluded (rheumatic heart disease (n= 2), congenital heart disease (n= 6), Wolf-Parkinson-White Syndrome (n= 2), weight and/or height percentile <3 or >97 (n= 64) and insufficient ECG recordings due to noisy (n= 218)). Remaining 1530 ECG's were included in the study. Results: Of the children 754 (49.3%) were male, and the mean age was 10.8±6.9 years (6-16 years)). The median, 2nd and 98th percentile values were determined for clinically relevant ECG parameters. When compared to the previous study performed at sea level, our results did not show any finding indicating right ventricular overload, except for the high R wave amplitude and R/S ratio in V3R. Conclusion: In this study, we determined the normal ECG standards, for children living in Erzurum for age groups of 6-8 years, 8-12 years and 12-16 years. Our results suggested that moderate altitude does not have an important effect on normal ECG parameters. Copyright © 2010 by Türkiye Klinikleri.
