Özet

Purpose: It is imperative to reach a diagnosis and to start the treatment immediately for patients with presumably malignant liver masses. The aim of this study is to establish an algorithm to be followed during diagnostic work-up. Patients methods: The files of 61 patients treated between 1992-1997 in our clinic were reviewed retrospectively. Results: Abdominal ultrasonography (USG) and/or computerized tomography (CT) were performed to reach a diagnosis. Then a fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) under USG guidance was applied. Hepatocellular carcinoma was diagnosed in 20 patients. Twenty-seven patients had metastatic tumor and primary focus was found in only eight patients. Hepatocellular carcinoma patients and patients with unknown primary tumors received chemotherapy. Primary tumor was localized in pancreas, lung and stomach in two patients each and in colon and rectum in one patient each. Conclusion: In patients with presumably malignant liver masses after localizing the masses with USG and/or CT, histological diagnosis must be confirmed with FNAB and the treatment should be planned according to the result.
