Adaptation of the interpersonal relationships dependency scale for adolescents

Interpersonal dependency in adolescence is associated with a broad spectrum of psychopathology, yet no psychometrically validated measure exists for Turkish adolescents. This study adapted the Interpersonal Relationship Dependency Scale (IRDS), originally developed for Turkish young adults, for use in adolescents aged 12–18 years. An Expert panel review and a readability assessment were conducted prior to administration. The adapted form (IRDS-A) was administered to 229 adolescents recruited from pediatric outpatient clinics. Confirmatory factor analysis using the WLSMV estimator replicated the original two-factor structure (Approval Dependency and Emotional Dependency), with adequate model fit after theoretically justified error covariance modifications. Internal consistency, composite reliability, convergent validity, and discriminant validity all met established psychometric thresholds. Scalar measurement invariance across sex was supported. The IRDS-A demonstrated a positive correlation with smartphone addiction. These findings provide initial psychometric evidence supporting the IRDS-A as a brief, reliable, and structurally valid measure of interpersonal dependency in Turkish adolescents.
