Özet
Maternal obesity is the most common medical condition in pregnancy. Since there is no pregnancy-specific standardization, the diagnosis is made according to pre-pregnancy Body Mass Index (BMI). Physiological effects caused by pregnancy may exacerbate the negative effects of obesity on maternal systems (cardiovascular, respiratory, metabolic, inflammatory changes, etc.). Similarly, obesity may increase the incidence and severity of pregnancy-specific maternal and fetal complications. Because of adverse pregnancy outcomes, the optimal approach is to control obesity with preconceptional counseling. If there is obesity and pregnancy, testing for pregestational diabetes in the first trimester, monitoring BMI throughout pregnancy, screening of fetal effects, antenatal screening protocols, targeted ultrasound examinations, and maternal systemic effects (obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), carpal tunnel syndrome, VTE risk, etc.) is recommended. Considering the risk of prolonged delivery, cesarean section, and anesthesia complications in obese pregnancy, delivery should be planned in centers suitable for maternal and fetal care.
