Neurological intensive care units (NICUs) refer to places where critical neurological patients are followed up and treated in tertiary health institutions. Infectious complications are observed in 1/3 of patients admitted to NICUs. Nosocomial infections are observed interestingly at higher rates due to neurological deterioration. NICUs also have additional risk factors due to reasons such as the elderly patient population, immobility, debility, and intensive use of steroids along with an increased risk of nosocomial infections similar to those of patients hospitalized in other intensive care units. The incidence of urinary tract and catheter-related infections is similar to that of other ICUs, while patients in a coma have significant risk factors for hospital-acquired pneumonia. Unlike other intensive care units, there may be difficulties in establishing a clinical diagnosis in patients hospitalized in the NICU since the symptom of fever is confused with central fever. Nevertheless, nosocomial central nervous system infections may occur due to procedures performed in the NICU. Thus, it is considered that mortality due to other ICU complications may vary in the NICU.
