Özet
Background: Acute appendicitis in an inguinal hernia that has been called as "Amyand's Hernia" since the day on which Claudius Amyand has described the condition. That was the first appendectomy ever reported in the literature. The incidence of acute appendicitis in an inguinal hernia is 0,13 % of all cases with acute appendicitis. Herein, the patients diagnosed with Amyand's hernia are evaluated retrospectively. Methods: The clinical, laboratory and radiological findings in patients with Amyand's hernia between 2005 and 2008 are evaluated. Results: In this period, 2250 patients with hernia were operated and hernioplasty was performed. Amyand's hernia was diagnosed in only 21 patients. The age ranged from 18 to 78 years (median, 55 years). The most common symptoms were right inguinal mass and abdominal pain, and the most common findings were right inguinal mass and right lower quadrant tenderness. Leukocytosis and neutrophilia were detected in 4 patients. Appendectomy plus hernioplasty in 8 patients and appendectomy plus mesh hernioplasty in 9 patients were performed. Conclusion: When diagnosed in the operating room, appendectomy through herniotomy is the procedure of choice in Amyand's hernia. Herein we report 21 cases with Amyand's hernia and review the literature.
