Özet
Objective: The symptoms of dizziness and imbalance caused by cervical MPS are not investigated sufficiently. The aim of this study is to evaluate the dizziness and balance impairment which may cause disability in patients with cervical MPS. Material and Methods: Thirty women with cervical MPS and 15 age-matched healthy women were included in the study. Cervical range of motions (ROM) of both groups were measured with goniometer. Taut band and trigger point localizations were determined in sternocleidomastoideus (SCM), trapezius (TR), levator scapula (LSC), multifidus (MU) and splenius cervicis (SC) muscles of patient group. The pain pressure threshold (PPT) measurements were obtained from SCM, TR, LSC, MU muscles of both groups. Dynamic balance was evaluated using functional reach (FR) test, performance related balance was determined with Berg balance scale (BBS), dizziness was assessed with dizziness handicap inventory (DHI) and depression was assessed with Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). Results: The cervical flexion extension and rotation were significantly decreased in the patient group when compared with healthy subjects (p<0,001, p<0,001, p<0,05 respectively). The mean PPT values of the SCM, TR, LSC and MU muscles of patients were significantly lower than the PPT values of healthy subjects (p<0,001, p<0,001, p=0, p<0,05). The mean FR and BBS values in the patient group were significantly lower (p<0,001), and DHI and BDI values were higher than healthy subjects (p<0,001). There were significant correlations between DHI and BBS, FR scores (r=-0,469, r=-0,371). Conclusion: Dizziness and imbalance are common in patients with cervical MPS because of the proprioceptive receptor dysfunction. Therefore, dizziness and impaired balance must be evaluated and should be taken into consideration before planning the treatment of cervical MPS patients.
