Özet

Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate eye health literacy and vision-related quality of life levels in type 2 diabetic individuals, determine the relationship between these variables, and identify associated factors. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 336 type 2 diabetic individuals. The data were collected using a patient information form, the Eye Health Literacy Scale, and the National Eye Institute-Visual Function Questionnaire. Results: The eye health literacy levels of the participants were above-average, and their vision-related quality of life levels were moderate. There was a positive relationship between eye health literacy and vision-related quality of life. Eye health literacy explained 5% of the total variance in vision-related quality of life. The participants at or over the age of 65 years, those who had not received education about eye health after their diagnosis, and those who had developed diabetic retinopathy had lower vision-related quality of life levels. Furthermore, a negative and weakly significant relationship was found between glycated hemoglobin and vision-related quality of life. Conclusion: As eye health literacy increases in diabetic individuals, their vision-related quality of life can also be increased. The status of having received education on eye health, especially from healthcare professionals, was found to be associated with both eye health literacy and vision-related quality of life. In terms of vision-related quality of life, nurses should raise awareness regarding eye health literacy among all diabetic individuals, especially those who are at risk.
