Özet
Varicella zoster virus (VZV) is the causative agent of chicken pox as the primary infection which is the most frequent viral infection among the childhood diseases all around the world and the herpes zoster infection (zona/shingles) which is caused by the reactivation of the virus staying latent at the dorsal root ganglia in the elderly as the secondary infection. Herpes zoster infection is very rare in otherwise healthy infants and is usually encountered in those having imunodeficiency or receiving corticosteroids and chemotherapeutics causing immune supression and those undergoing chronic and/or emotional stres. Cardiac surgeries have high morbidity and mortality rates, and they usually need long post operative intensive care,which cause serious stress. We report a case of herpes zoster infection in an infant following congenital cardiac surgery and stress induced as a result of prolonged postoperative stay. Copyright © 2012 by Türkiye Klinikleri.
