Özet
Chronic diseases provoke various psychological and behavioral problems and thus necessitate psychiatric evaluation. One of the most common chronic diseases worldwide is chronic kidney disease. The best treatment method for chronic kidney disease is a live donor kidney transplantation. However, it requires a healthy person, the donor, to undergo a surgical procedure for the sake of a loved one. Unfortunately, after the transplant procedure, poor outcomes related to non-compliance can be recorded in varying ratios. Treatment non-compliance may lead to chronic allograft rejection and loss of the donated kidney. In many cases, an in-depth psychological evaluation can predict adverse post-transplant events such as non-compliance and propose improvement strategies. Therefore, the inclusion of a psychiatrist in the transplant team helps to prevent these undesirable outcomes. When the recipient, living donor, along with their family decides to proceed with the transplant, it is a lifelong commitment. A favorable psychiatric evaluation for both the donor and recipient is a testimony of all participants` willingness and commitment to the best outcome. This review highlights common issues faced at different stages of this lengthy pathway.
