Özet
In recent studies it has been suggested that gastrin has trophic effect on the development of colorectal cancer. Thirty patients (21 male, nine female) with histopathologicially canfurmed colorectal cancer and a control group of 20 subjects (14 male, nine female) with non-organic dyspepsi were included in this study. The mean age of patients with colorectal cancer was 63.2 years (range 24-80 years) and of control group patients was 59.5 years (range 38-68 years). Serum gastrin levels were determined in both the patient and control groups. Results showed a significant difference between the colorectal cancer group (mean 125.81 ± 108.9 pg/ml) and the control group (mean 37.86±8.4 pg/ml). Liver metastases were found in all patients with a 1.5-2 fold increase of serum gastrin levels. When the colorectal cancer patients were subgrouped into above and belav 60 years of age. Those over 60 years old (n=21) had significantly higher gastrin levels than those under the age of 60 (p=0.005). There was no significant relatiaiship between male and female patients (p=0.44) with respect to serum gastrin levels. To conclude, serum gastrin levels were found to be significantly high in patients with colorectal cancer. These levels increased further with advancing age but were not related to gender.
