Özet

Introduction: Lithium is a mood stabilizing agent that may be used in clinical cases like treatment resistant schizophrenia behind its use in mood disorders. Previous studies have shown that substantial variation occurs in the pharmacological treatment of bipolar disorder. Studies showed that nearly half of patients use lithium alone or in combination with other drugs (1, 2). But there are data suggesting that prescription patterns of mood stabilizers have changed over the last few years, with an increase in the prescription of anticonvulsants and a decrease in the use of lithium. Objective: The main aim of this retrospective study is to estimate changes in the prescription pattern of lithium in the years of 2005 and 2006. Method: The data base of Social Security Institution was examined retrospectively to examine trends in prescription pattern of lithium. Results: Our study results showed that a total of 48712 box of lithium had been used in 2005 while a total of 26319 box of lithium was used in 2006. Lithium prescription rates decreased in 2006. The rate of lithium decreased nearly 75% from the fourth quarter of 2005 to the fourth quarter of 2006 (Table). Conclusion: The use of lithium seems to be decreased nearly 75% in 24 months period in Turkey. Further studies are needed to explain reasons and conclusions of this change.
