Özet

Mitochondria are fundamental organelles to cell function. Mitochondrial functions include not only energy production but also a variety of other crucial processes that are all necessary for sustaining homeostasis. They are endosymbiotic organelles with two protective membranes and partial independence from the cell nucleus. Because of these qualities, mitochondria are known as transferable organelles. During physiological processes, cells exchange mitochondria with one another, and foreign mitochondria can be implanted into a cell. Aside from this, foreign mitochondria can be transplanted artificially, a process known as mitochondrial transplantation. The interest in this area of research has attracted many scientists. Research topics include, but are not limited to, diseases associated with mitochondrial DNA damage or mitochondrial dysfunction. This chapter provides an overview of several subjects, including the features and functions of the mitochondria organelle, mitochondria transfer in physiological processes, methods and areas of research on mitochondrial transplantation, as well as the findings of these studies.
