An uneventful complication of Behcet's disease: Intestinal perforation

Özet
Background: Behcet's disease (BD) is a multisystem inflammatory disease of unknown origin characterized by involvement of nearly all organ systems. The presence of gastrointestinal (GI) involvement in BD is an uncommon condition which due to its similarity with inflammatory intestinal disease can pose problems in diagnosis and treatment. Case Report: We present the case of a 40-year-old male patient with previously known BD with ileal and cecal perforation following resection of an ependymoma in a neurosurgery clinic. The patient underwent an emergency laparotomy for generalized peritonitis. Macroscopically, an inflamed, multi-perforated ileum and cecum were found and excised. The patient died due to multiple organ failure 7 days postoperatively. Conclusion: In patients with acute abdominal pain, ileocecal involvement should be suspected, and surgery should be performed as soon as possible. © 2006 S. Karger GmbH.
