Özet
Objective: To determine hepatitis B seroprevalence, the rate of vaccination and seroprotection after vaccination and to examine the change of anti-hepatitis B titers according to years in children aged 1-6 years old in Istanbul Material and Methods: This cross-sectional study was performed between July and October 2008. This study was including children aged 1-6 years old who applied to our outpatient pediatrics clinic with a complaint other than jaundice, have not chronic or immunosuppression diseases, no history of surgery and blood or blood product transfusion. Hepatitis B virus (HBV) serologic markers (HBsAg, anti-HBs, anti-HBc IgG and IgM) were studied by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Results: One hundred ninety eight (62.1%) of 319 children included in the study were male, one hundred twenty one (37.9%) were female. Vaccination history against hepatitis B was positive in 309 (96.9%) cases and was negative 10 (3.1%) cases. Although they had declared that they were vaccinated against hepatitis B, 33 (10.7%) cases were found to be seronegative and 276 (89.3%) cases were found to be seropositive. History of contact with chronic carrier of hepatitis B was positive 12 (3.8%) cases. HBsAg was found positive in one (%0.3) case. Anti-HBc IgG ve IgM determined negative all of the study cases. Anti-HBs titer above 100 mLU/mL level was significantly higher in children younger than two years old compared to 2-4 years and 4-6 years old children (p< 0.05). Conclusion: This study demonstrated that hepatitis B vaccination programme by Turkish Ministery of Health has been successful in Istanbul which resulted in a very low rate of hepatitis B infection among children 1-6 years old.
