Özet
Hyperammonemia can present in the neonatal period with symptoms such as feeding intolerance, vomiting, and lethargy. Since these symptoms closely resemble those of neonatal sepsis, intoxication-type inherited metabolic diseases should be considered in the differential diagnosis of every newborn presenting with a sepsis-like picture. The definitive diagnosis of hyperammonemia is based on the measurement of plasma ammonia levels. Hyperammonemia is a medical emergency. Ammonia is a potent neurotoxin that crosses the blood-brain barrier rapidly, causes astrocyte swelling and cerebral edema, and, if untreated, can lead to death. Early and effective treatment positively impacts prognosis.
