Özet
Objective: The aim of the study was to determine the ratio of the brainstem strokes among all stroke cases, and to report demographical, clinical characteristics and rehabilitation outcomes of patients with brainstem stroke. Material and Methods: The data of patients with stroke (n=1807) rehabilitated in our hospital between January 1999-April 2003 were examined retrospectively. Thirty-four patients were identified as having suffered brainstem stroke. Three patients having started rehabilitation program after one year of stroke were excluded. Demographical characteristics, lesion localizations, stroke type (infarct or hemorrhage), stroke period (time from onset of stroke), clinic syndromes (Weber, Locked in, etc), length of stay and stroke related symptoms such as dysarthria, ataxia, diplopia, dysphagia and cranial nevre involvement were recorded. Functional levels of the patients were assessed with mobility index and motor levels with Brunnstrom stages at admission and discharge. Results: Total of 31 patients 20 (64.5%) were male and 11 (35.5%) were female. The mean stroke period was 64.12±47.49 days and length of stay was 40.38±22.41 days. Lesion localizations were in pons in 38.7% of the patients, and pons+cerebral hemisphere in 38.7%. The common stroke related symptoms were dysarthria (45.2), hemihypoestesia (41.9%), depression (25.8%), ataxia (22.6%) and dysphagia (19.4%) respectively. There were significant differences with respect to mobility index and Brunnstrom stages between admission and discharge (p<0.001). When the patients were divided into two groups with stroke period ≤45days (n=16) and 45>days (n=15) and compared with respect to mobility index at admission and discharge there was not significance. Conclusions: Patients with brainstem stroke can present with different clinical syndromes, and symptoms related with stroke. It must be born in mind that prognosis is good and patients can benefit from rehabilitation program at early and late period as well. Copyright © 2007 by Türk Tibbi Rehabilitasyon Kurumu Derneǧi.
