Colonoscopy and colonoscopic interventional procedures are associated with many infective complications. In the development of these complications; the risk factors depended to the patients (comorbidities, drugs, degree of cleaning), endoscopic device (sterilization), type of invasive intervention (polypectomy, dilatation, procudure time), the suitability of the disinfectant used and the risk factors belonging to the endoscopy team play a determining role. Although endogenous infections are related to Escherichia coli, Klebsiella spp., Enterobacter spp., and other Enterococci types, exogenous infections are associated with inappropriate disinfection processes which were preventable. Temporary bacteremia occurs after the procedure and usually resolves without clinical signs. P. aeruginosa and Salmonella spp. types can be isolated depending on contaminated devices. Significant contamination of bacterial, viral, and fungal infections may occur during the procedure. Ampicillin and amoxicillin are recommended for prophylaxis in patients who had a risk of infective endocarditis. Also, vancomycin is advised for prophylaxis in patients who cannot tolerate beta-lactams. Antibiotic prophylaxis is recommended in patients with varicose veins, the presence of pancreatic interventions, neutropenic patients, and patients who had a transplantation history. The hygiene steps related to the forceps, drugs, and serums used should be appropriate. Hand hygiene, personal protective equipment, safe drug and accessory management, and terminal cleaning are important.
