Özet

Francisella tularensis is a gram-negative, aerobic, intracellular coccobacillus that causes tularemia, a zoonotic disease. A number of transmission routes have been identified, such as inhalation, cutaneous transmission, and gastrointestinal transmission. F. tularensis can invade various phagocytic and nonphagocytic cell types, survive and replicate intracellularly. It is a highly virulent bacterium causing infection at low doses. It has been accepted as a potential biological weapon since it is known that its inhalation, even at low doses, can cause severe illness and death. It is probably the reason why studies on the pathogenesis of F. tularensis have increased significantly in recent years. In this chapter, the pathogenesis steps are described, including attachment to the host cell, uptake into the cell, intracellular replication, virulence factors, and the host immune response of F. tularensis.
