Özet
In this report, we aimed to underline schistosomiasis as a serious public health problem especially in individuals with a history of hematuria, travel and swimming. Turkish male workers who had been to Mali swam in Niger River once and subsequently three of them (32, 35, and 40 year-old staff) developed fever, back pain, myalgia and malaise in the following month. While their complaints continued, hematuria (severe in one case) developed four months later with an abundant amount of erythrocytes in urine. Ultrasonography revealed solid massive areas in different positions with regular boundaries on the bladder wall. Histopathological examination of the bladder biopsy specimen and urine specimens revealed Schistosoma haematobium eggs. Patients were treated with praziquantel in a single dose of 40 mg/kg of body weight. The patients remained symptom-free during 12 months of follow-up after anti-parasitic therapy.
