Özet

MRSA has become a major nosocomial pathogen in intensive care units. MRSA colonization precedes infections. MRSA strains usually are introduced in to by colonized or infected patients or colonized health care staff. MRSA is most commonly transmitted on the hands of transiently colonized health care staff who have acquired the organism following contact with a source patient. In this study, the S. aureus carriage rate and resistance of the isolated strains to some antibiotics of the nasal, throat and hand cultures of the 55 hospital staff were investigated in respiratory and surgical intensive care unit of the Ataturk Center for Chest Disease and Thoracic Surgery. Total S. aureus and MRSA carriage were 92.7% (in 51 of 55 staff) and 21.5% (in 11 of 51 staff) respectively. As a result, it was concluded that cautions for the control of infections should be increased and the importance of washing hands should particularly be highlighted.
