Özet
Objective: Despite of all the improvements in diagnotic methods and treatment modalities; perinatal asphyxia is still one of most common reason of the newborn mortality and morbidity. The aim of this study was to examine the diagnostic value of ischemia modified albumin (IMA) levels in perinatal asphyxia. Material and Methods: A-total of 48 pregnant patients were enrolled into the study; as study group, 24 patients with diagnosis of perinatal asphyxia, and 24 healthy term pregnant patients, as the control group. The age, body mass index (BMI), parity, birth weight, and gestational weeks of all the participants were recorded and the pH values and IMA levels of all the subjects were studied by performing umblical artery blood sampling. The 5th minute Apgar scores of all newborns were recorded and compared between groups. Results: No significant difference was found in the age, BMI, parity, birth weight, and gestational age of perinatal asphyxia and control groups (p> 0.05). Apgar scoring was 7.17±1.13 in the perinatal asphyxia group and 9.25±0.6 in the control group where it was statistically significant lower in the study group (p< 0.001). Average pH value for perinatal asphyxia group was found to be 7.11±0.09, while it was 7.34±0.05 for the control group (p< 0.001). The average IMA values were recorded as, 0.63±0.06 in the study group, and 0.47±0.08 in the controls (p< 0.001). Statistically significant high IMA levels were found in perinatal asphyxia group while pH values were significantly lower compared to control group (p< 0.001). Conclusion: The increase of IMA levels at umbilical artery was found to be associated with perinatal asphyxia. Copyright © 2011 by Türkiye Klinikleri.
