Özet
Transition metal complexes derived from Schiff base ligands have garnered significant interest in coordination chemistry due to their diverse biological activities, including antimicrobial, antiproliferative, antimalarial, anti-Alzheimer's, and antidiabetic functions. In this study, a new Schiff base was synthesized by condensing benzoin with tryptamine, and four metal complexes were prepared using Cu+2, Co+2, Ni+2, and Cd+2 metals with this Schiff base. Antimicrobial activities of metal complexes were investigated and compared against bacterial and fungal strains. DFT, Frontier molecular orbitals and band energy gaps were analyzed to assess the bond angle, bond length, reactivity and charge transfer potential of the compounds. The results indicated that the Schiff base metal complexes exhibited enhanced antibacterial activity relative to the parent ligand, especially against S.aureus compound 2 (37.11 µg/ml) had better MIC value than ligand (L) (97.7 µg/ml). However, the antifungal activities of the metal complexes were not as potent as their antibacterial effects. These findings highlight the potential of Schiff base and its metal complexes as antimicrobial agents, particularly against various bacterial strains.
