Özet
Neonatal brain function monitoring has become a critical component of care in neonatal intensive care units, particularly for infants who are at risk of neurological complications due to birth-related injuries, preterm birth, or other factors. The brain of a newborn, especially preterm or exposed to adverse perinatal conditions, is highly vulnerable to damage, which can have long-lasting consequences on neurodevelopment. aEEG is particularly beneficial in settings where traditional EEG monitoring may not be feasible, as it can be continuously applied at the bedside, providing real-time insights into cerebral function. This allows clinicians to detect changes in brain activity early, often before clinical signs manifest, enabling prompt intervention. The introduction of aEEG has transformed neonatal neurocritical care, offering a practical, bedside solution that bridges the gap between clinical symptoms and the more complex, time-intensive data provided by conventional EEG. This chapter discusses the evolution of aEEG in neonatal care, highlighting its diagnostic capabilities, clinical applications, limitations, and its technical aspects, and its role in diagnosing and managing various neurological conditions in newborns. The discussion includes a focus on its applications, the interpretation of aEEG patterns, and the current evidence on its predictive value for long-term outcomes in neonates. It also addresses current challenges in interpretation and future directions for integrating aEEG into broader neonatal neurological assessment protocols.
