Özet

Bioactive substances, mostly obtained from herbal sources, hold great importance in designing and formulating naturally derived drugs. Due to their complex structures, bioactive substances often exhibit multiple pharmacological and/or physical activities, providing multifaceted effects in the products they are included in. Particularly, bioactives originating from herbs offer various effects such as antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, astringent, and cell proliferative properties, crucial for wound healing. However, they also possess certain limitations due to undesired properties like chemical/physical instability, incompatibility with certain formulation ingredients, and potential skin irritability/allergy. A wound, regardless of its cause or type, can significantly impact one’s quality of life. The ideal scenario involves quick healing, devoid of infection and pain. Wound healing encompasses inflammation, tissue formation, and tissue remodeling- a process historically aided by herbal remedies. These remedies, whether in total extracts or as isolated bioactive substances, have garnered substantial attention and remain influential in wound healing. Presently, isolated bioactives like curcumin, quercetin, astaxanthin, delphinidin, β-carotene, and flavonoids are frequently employed in this domain. To enhance bioactive efficacy and mitigate undesired properties, researchers have turned to nanocarriers for delivering these substances in wound healing. Nanocarriers offer advantages such as increased bioavailability, extended release, improved skin permeability, safety, and patient compliance during the healing process. These carriers come in various forms-nanoparticles, nanogels, nanoemulsions, niosomes, nanofibers, and nanosheets-contributing to their efficacy. The interaction of bioactive-based nanocarrier systems with biological systems and their role in regulating the wound-healing process offer promising treatment opportunities. This chapter delves into the benefits of bioactives in wound healing, studies on nanodelivery of bioactives, and the latest advancements in this dynamic field.
