Özet
More than 400 species of fungi can cause disease in humans. Changes in climate, migration and an increasing number of people with weakened immune systems have accelerated the incidence of fungal infections. In the United States alone, there are nearly 9 million outpatient visits annually for fungal infections. New fungal species that can develop antifungal resistance, such as Candida auris, raise concerns about treatment. Thus, it is important that primary care physicians understand the dermatological signs of fungal infections so they know how to identify them. Dermatophytoses is a common clinic manifestation among fungal infections affecting individuals of all ages around the world. These infections can easily be diagnosed by tests conducted in primary care settings. A delay in diagnosis results can cause complications and increase a patient's economic burden. Nevertheless, oral antifungal therapy should not be prescribed until the pathogen fungal organism has been identified, except in certain circumstances. Referral to a specialist is required for systemic forms or resistance to initial therapy. Family physicians should warn their patients about predisposing factors of fungal infections such as wearing tight clothing, walking barefoot, and traveling to endemic regions.
