Özet
Bilirubin neurotoxicity remains to be an important health issue, especially in developing countries. Despite the fact that using screening guidelines and early therapeutic interventions have reduced the rate of bilirubin-induced neurotoxicity, the disease continues to be a major neonatal morbidity. Hyperbilirubinemia is a common condition in pediatric practice. We now know that almost every newborn will experience some degree of hyperbilirubinemia. A major fraction of these cases being physiological and nondetrimental, neonates with risk factors are a potential target for irreversible neurological damage in absence of awareness. Our aim is to emphasize that bilirubin induced neurotoxicity is a condition that must never occur. In this chapter, we attempted to summarize the etiologies and pathophysiology of bilirubin neurotoxicity.
