Özet
Objectives: In this study, we aimed to evaluate the efficiency and safety of the injection of intralesioner Interferon (IFN)-α2a in the treatment of Peyronie's disease with penile curvature. Materials and Methods: This prospective study included 37 patients (mean age was 59.74 years) with penile deformity due to Peyronie's disease in acute period (mean 6.9±3.7 m). IFN (1.500.000 IU) was applied to 27 of the patients intralesionally every other day for 6 weeks (IFN group) while saline (0.5 cc) was applied to only 10 of them (control group) in the same manner. Pain, the degree of the penile curvature and the size of the plaque were evaluated before and after the treatment. The patients were also asked about their sexual life (IIEF-5). Results: In IFN group, the pain on erection disappeared in 12 of the 17 patients who had had pain before the therapy, and they also reported a improvement in their deformity and in the ease of penetration. The plaque became soft in 65.62% of the patients and smaller in 37.50% of the patients. Penile curvature was improved to some extent in 53.12% of the patients (mean 20°). The lessening of the size of the plaque was 43.21% which was <1cm; 36.73% in 1-2 cm and 23.18% in >2 cm. In addition, eight of the thirteen patients reported an improvement in tumesence. Apart from the size of the plaques, 4 patients who had calcified plaque didn't show any improvement. In the control group, in one patient who had had pain before treatment the pain decreased. No other improvement was observed in the other patients in the group. While no local side effects were observed in all of the patients in two groups, some minimal systemic side effects were observed in 96.29 % of the IFN group. Conclusion: As a result, intralesional IFN-α2a treatment causes decrease in the pain and the plaque size and an improvement in the penile curvature in patients with acute period Peyronie's disease. Therefore, it may help the improvement of subjective sexual activity, especially in patients who have small plaques without calcification.
