Özet

OBJECTIVE: To investigate plasma homocysteine levels in women with previous preterm birth history. STUDY DESIGN: Thirty eight pregnant (G) and thirty seven non-pregnant (N) women who had similar sociodemographical characteristics were divided into subgroups according to the number of preterm births they previously had (N1: one preterm births; n1:13, N2: two preterm births; n:10, N0: no preterm birth; n: 15, G1: no preterm birth; n: 15, G2: one preterm birth; n:10, G:0 two preterm births; n:12). Fasting plasma homocysteine levels were identified in all cases. One way ANOVA test was used to evaluate the data. p<0.05 was considered as statistically significant. RESULTS: Plasma homocysteine levels were N1: 8.6±1.1, N2: 12.5±1.4, N0: 8.6±0.9, G1: 4.9±0.8, G2: 9.2±1.3. G0: 5.2±1.0. Plasma homocysteine levels were found to be significantly higher N0 and G0 cases when compared to cases in other groups (p±0.05). CONCLUSION: We suggest that homocysteine levels should be assessed in women with history of preterm births. Homocysteine levels may he used as a beneficial marker to estimate preterm birth risk.
