Hair loss is a common side effect of psychotropic agents. However, specific serotonin reuptake inhibitors associated with hair loss is rare and limited to case reports. Pathological mechanism has yet to be fully elucidated. Sertraline has effectively been used in the treatment of major depressive episodes in patients with schizophrenia. Hair loss perceives an undesirable effect, resulting in poor compliance and hence therapeutic failures. Dosage reduction, drug discontinuation, or pursuing therapy with another agent remains the most promising management option for hair loss. In this article, a case of a woman with a diagnosis of schizophrenia accompanied by major depressive episode who developed hair loss after taking sertraline was presented. Dermatology and endocrinology consultations were obtained to rule out possible other causes of hair loss, but none was detected. Hence, sertraline was discontinued and hair loss resolved within three-months.
