Özet
Malaria, especially Plasmodium falciparum malaria, is a severe and fatal disease as well as with a high potential cost for health disease if diagnosis fails. Prompt and accurate diagnosis of malaria is a key component for effective disease management. The diagnosis is mainly based on clinical suspicion or on the detection of parasites in the blood. Parasite-based management of malaria rather than symptom-based diagnosis can provide more significant contribution for this aim. Microscopic examination of stained blood smears remains the gold standard for diagnosis. On the other hand, malaria rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs), a relatively new and evolving technology, can play an important role for parasite-based diagnosis of malaria in remote areas where microscopy is difficult to support. RDTs require minimal operator training and yield highly reproducible test interpretations in less than 1 hour. This review focus on RDTs and shortly the other diagnostic tests related to malaria.
