Özet

Through the aging process a decrease in functional abilities, a regression of life quality and an increase in health care costs occur by time. In elderly people falls constitutes a major portion of the reasons which are related with the accidents that causes injuries or death. Intrinsic risk factors for falling consist of normal physiologic changes related to aging (postural control, alterations in visual and walking abilities), acute or chronic disease that would affect the function and coordination of the muscles and the skeletal system, and the drugs used during this period; extrinsic risk factors for falling are the factors which do not provide appropriate ergonomie conditions in the environment of the elderly people life. By aging a gradual decline in the function of the cardiovascular, visual, neurologic, and musculoskeletal system takes place. These changes affect gate and balance, and therefore contribute to increased risk of falling. Cognitive changes and mood disorder may lead to reduced attention, planning, dexterity, coordination, and other executive functions, thus contributing to the risk of falling. In a geriatric patient's examination it is obligatory to determine the risk factors that might be related to falls and to take precautions to prevent elderly from falls. The goal of this review is to highlight the value of the evaluation of elderly patients in terms of fall risk. Copyright © 2007 by Türk Tibbi Rehabilitasyon Kurumu Derneǧi.
