Özet

Glycyrrhiza genus is represented by six species known as Glycyrrhiza iconica Hub.-Mor, Glycyrrhiza glabra L., Glycyrrhiza asymmetrica Hub.-Mor, Glycyrrhiza aspera Pall., Glycyrrhiza echinata L., and Glycyrrhiza flavescens Boiss. in Turkey. The species has been used for treatment of gastrointestinal diseases, respiratory diseases, some endocrine diseases, and smoking addiction traditionally for many years. The effectiveness of Glycyrrhiza genus is based on its antioxidant, antidepressant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antitussive, anti-ulcerative, antiviral, immunomodulatory, hepatoprotective, and neuroprotective benefits that have been proven by scientific research. Triterpenoid saponins such as glycyrrhizin, glabasaponin A-G, macedonoside A, yunganoside G1-G2, as well as phenolic constituents such as liquiritin, rhamnoliquirilin, liquiritigenin, glucoliquiritin, semilicoisoflavone B, licoriphenone, 1-methoxyficifolinol, shinpterocarpin, shinflavanone, licopyranocoumarin, glisoflavone, licoarylcoumarin, iconichalcone, hydroxymethoxychalcone, 2'-O-methylisoliquiritigenin, 3-O-methylkaempferol, topazolin, and coumarin-GU-12, are the major compounds of Glycyrrhiza genus which are responsible for its beneficial effects. Therefore, Glycyrrhiza species grown in Turkey have therapeutic potential for many ailments due to their phytochemical content, biological activity, and traditional uses.
