We aimed to compare the effects of bupivacaine and levobupivacaine infiltration on postoperative pain after lomber discectomy operation. Sixty adult patients, who will have elective micro-discectomy operation, were included into the study, after being informed and taking local ethical commity referance. Patients were randomly allocated to three groups: Wound infiltration with bupivacaine (groupI), levobupivacaine (groupII) and normal saline (groupIII). Pain scores with visual analogue scale (VAS) was assessed during postoperative 2nd, 4th, 6th, 12th hours and time to first analgesic treatment was recorded. VAS was significantly lower in groupsI and II than groupIII, during postoperative 2nd, 4th, 6th, 12th hours(p<0.05). There wasn't a meaningful difference between groupI and II(p>0.05). In comparision of 24th hour's VAS score, there wasn't meaningful difference among the other groups. Time to first analgesic treatment was significantly longer in groupI than groupII while it was longer in groupII than groupIII.(p<0.05). The incidence of side effects were higher in groupII than groupI and groupIII(p<0.05). The wound infiltration with bupivacaine resulted with a reduction of analgesic consumption and decrease in postoperative pain without complications. We conclude that infiltration of the wound site with levobupivacaine provides similar pain control compared to bupivacaine but incidence of side effects was higher with levobupivacaine than bupivacaine.
