Plantar fascia is the most important structure supporting longitudinal arch of the foot. Overloading beyond the physiologic border of plantar fascia causes plantar fasciitis (PF). The aim of this study was to evaluate the ultrasonographic features of the PF and the role of steroid injection in the management of the disease. Fourteeen (13 women and 1 man) patients with bilateral plantar fasciitis and fourteen control subjects matched by age, gender and body mass index (BMI) were included in this study. High resolution ultrasonography was used for the assessment of plantar fascia thickness and echogenity. Pain intensity was quantified with visual analog scale (VAS). 20 mg methylprednisolone and 0.5 ml %2 xylocine was injected into the 28 heels of 14 bilateral PF patients. Ultrasonographic evaluation of the plantar fascia and VAS assessments were performed before and one month after injection. Fascia thickness and VAS scores were remarkably decreased after injection (p<0.001). We concluded that ultrasound is a useful method for evaluating PF and steroid injection is effective in the management of the disease.
